Welcome

Welcome to Adult Learning in the Digital Age.  This page is for the use of EDU 630.70a, The  Adult Learner, Spring 2017.

In this presentation, you have had the opportunity to use Facebook and Twitter.  These are only two of the many social media platforms that are available.   Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram and Google Plus are just a few more of the commonly used social media platforms.  The following are two infographics that explore different social media platforms and provide the most common uses of each.

After looking at the information on the infographics, choose one of the platforms, and  describe how you could use it for work or school.  In the comment section, share your idea with everyone else.  Let your classmates know if you like their idea and want to 'borrow' it.

Finally, going to #5, you will be using Instagram.  If you don't have a account, please create one.  In #5 section you will post a video with your final thoughts on this presentation.

  1. I think LinkedIn is a great platform to teach resume building in the high school setting. Many students graduate from high school without ever creating a resume. This is a huge disservice and they would benefit from creating a LinkedIn account and using the resume function!

    1. I wish this platform would have been one we needed to create, although I know it's a lot of work. I actually have gotten away with never creating one, but I know I need to. I know how beneficial it can be for potential employers to look at who you are before contacting you... Maybe I can use YouTube as a walk through guide to creating a LinkedIn!

    2. I love the idea of using LinkedIn as a platform for either a work/school setting. It does seem to be incredibly useful. Like you have pointed out, creating a functional resume is imminent for success in the professional world.

    1. I love YouTube for exactly these sorts of videos. I use them all the time in class!

    2. I also agree. Youtube has access to millions of videos that are great for teaching concepts and training.

  3. YouTube is a platform that I used a lot in my current, traditionally formatted courses. I can send the students links to videos in YouTube that show or demonstration course topics. Additionally, I can record my own videos and then send those videos to my students. I use this all the time to record videos of myself working example problems.

    1. I use YouTube *almost* interchangeably with google now. When I'm confused on how to install and use something, to replace a part in my apartment (I try to be a handyman), or even things music lyrics, movie trailers, or TedTalks. YouTube is the bees knees!

    2. YouTube is a remarkable resource to instruction and training and with its merger with Google, I think that it will only grow in usefulness and relevance.

  4. Google Plus makes sharing very easy. You can also find people to add to your circle pretty easily by using google's search feature. It is great for increasing exposure when you start sharing content. Many public school systems currently use google plus because of its ease and convenience.

    1. I had a few Professors in my undergrad who used Google Plus on a weekly basis. They used surveys during group presentations. A group would present, and then we'd get a link where we fill out something we learned, how the presentation could have been improved, and our overall grade. Those answers would only get sent to our professor, and doing those reviews provided us a few extra points for the semester! It was a win-win situation.

    2. I would have to agree with you in that Google Plus has made life as a student much easier. I love the accessibility and the sharing aspect. I think it'd be helpful in a work setting as well.

  5. I think Instagram is a huge use of SM in the marketing world. For example, at my job as the GA for the golf team, I created an Instagram account @lrugolf to be able to keep our fans updated on what's going in the golf world at LR. We are able to post tournament updates, links archived stories, live tournament websites, and even behind the scenes looks. I've gotten great feedback from our followers saying it's easier for them to open up their Instagram app and see our posts rather than search for it on the internet!

  6. Facebook is a platform that could be useful in a school or work setting. Using Facebook, one could either create a group or a page that promotes learning and/or trainings. What I like about creating a group through Facebook, is that you can adjust privacy settings and accept/deny posts from members as well. It seems as the possibilities are pretty endless with Facebook.

  7. I have very little experience using Google Plus, but it sounds like it would be beneficial to the athletics community at LR. Currently the primary method of communication from athletics administrators to athletes is email. This is not always ideal because a lot of college students do not always check their email on a regular basis. Additionally, it is kind of "old" and "boring" so it may not exactly appeal to the student-athletes. With Google Plus, administrators and coaches can create groups for their teams and post any important information in that group. In my opinion, it is sort of like a mix between a group text message and email. Emails can be limited at times in terms of what can be sent, but Google Plus allows for many different types of media to be displayed. This is not a replacement for email, but it may help with communicating within a group/team.

    1. The post above is mine. For some reason, my name would not pop up where it should be.

  8. As a former teacher, I loved Pinterest! I was able to access an array of lesson plans made by other teachers, like me, and so many fun DIY projects and with easy to use instructions I would have never seen before. It was like a global teacher work day and sharing center. I've also used it many times in my personal life like when I'm in a food rut and want some creative meal planning or fixing things around the house.
